Originally founded in 1926 by Anna Essinger, the Landschulheim Herrlingen became a Jewish boarding school in 1933 when Essinger immigrated to England under pressure from the Nazi party. At that time, new Jewish schools were not allowed and many other Jewish schools were closing, but Essinger managed to re-open the Landschulheim Herrlingen as a Jewish school under the headmastership of Hugo Rosenthal. Although Rosenthal was himself a Zionist, the goal of Jüdisches Landschulheim Herrlingen was to provide a progressive education rich in Jewish culture and heritage, not strictly to indoctrinate youth in Zionism. As part of student life, the students formed groups called chevroth (plural for chevrah). Each chevrah participated in community building activities such as hiking, music playing, or preparing a wall-newspaper for the school. (Schachne, Lucie. Education Towards Spiritual Resistance. Frankfurt am Main: Dipa Verlag, 1988.)
